This 1936 National was a 4 o’clock in the afternoon Saturday
yard sale item. The man of the house was taking down his signs when I asked
about the machine. He said five bucks. I tossed it in the car.
It has the most unusual bobbin carrier in that you had to
screw the mechanism in to the machine, but the bits were all there including
several bobbins and attachments. I cleaned and oiled the machine, searched for
lint and dirt and any resistance in the mechanisms. It took two attempts to get
the threading correct, but it sewed. This was a straight stitch only machine,
and it wasn’t on her list. Sis had other ideas for a dedicated straight stitch machine
and eventually, after cleaning and polishing the machine and cabinet, it was
gifted it to a local charity.
